Also, I seem to have a monkey on my back, and it wants books.
I just received Appropriate: The Houses of Joseph Esherick. Esherick is the unsung hero of a systems-based West Coast vernacular, rooted in site, program, construction methods and a refusal to be "assertive." As head of UC Berkeley's School of Architecture and of EHDD, Esherick managed to influence a huge number of architects and academics, and his approach, avidly contextual while being deeply rooted in a refusal to make assumptions, can be seen clearly today throughout the region.
It's rarely mentioned in the rush to canonize Charles Moore and MLTW, but Esherick's Hedgerow Houses were and are a huge part of what makes Sea Ranch important. This book is long overdue.
