I need to start practicing my vocal characterization.
Some years ago we were on vacation in Ashland and on a whim I bought a copy of The Phantom Tollbooth. That night after a play I began reading it out loud to my dear wife. We continued this on a nightly basis for two weeks before differing schedules interrupted.
With zyggy* on the way, she's decided we need to start again. I thought it would have to wait, as the books are all still in boxes upstairs, but she was impatient and bought another copy.
Most of the voices are within my range, but last time I made the dog voice so rough my voice began to fail. I'll need to rethink that or I'll end up with semi-permanent laryngitis.
* My wife wanted to nickname the kid as soon as we knew she was pregnant. I feel odd bestowing nicknames in the absence of gender, personality or physical traits, so I resisted. Also, it seemed silly to give a zygote a nickname and said so. A coworker of hers/friend of ours immediately pounced on the "zygote" thing and the name "ziggy." My only contribution was to insist on zyggy as a spelling, as the name was derived from zygote, not the funny pages.
A picture of zyggy.
