Aug. 31st, 2008 05:16 pmIf the candidates for President want to honor and make a difference in New Orleans, this assuming Gustav does what it's likely to in the city, I have a suggestion:
I imagine it's difficult to redirect funds allocated to a political campaign, due to the justified scrutiny such funding gets. So I don't imagine either campaign can just set aside funds for the citizens hit by the storm. Instead, maybe the next two or three campaign fundraising events could be repurposed as relief fundraisers. I don't know how legal it is, but I have to think it would be easier to redirect money as it enters the system than to extract it for redirection.
As well, it would be a major show of goodwill, likely to be viewed kindly by the media and electorate, and difficult to paint as partisan. It's also the kind of thing the public would like to see in a political campaign, I suspect.
There is going to be a fair amount of rhetoric surrounding this storm. It would be nice to see something positive come out of the political process as well.
EDIT: Teach me not to read the news every hour, eh?
