The Sonic Landscape
Sep. 27th, 2004 04:31 pmWhen we moved out of the...I suppose I have to call it a house...yes, house. Anyway, when we moved out of the last house I got a little wistful for the soon-to-be-absent sounds (and feelings) of the train tracks so close by. I realize we've had sounds here which, while not replacing the particularly immediate feeling of the whole house rattling around one, give this apartment a connection to the larger world.
Since the BART tracks are only a seven-minute walk from here, we hear the trains as they make the transition from the grounded tracks to the elevated ones, an odd, tonal rail sound, almost like a quiet version of the Tie Fighter sound effect from Star Wars. The announcements made on the station platform are garbled here, just sound. We also have regular trains, though all we hear from the apartment is the odd train horn. The trucks and crews at the back of Safeway have become regular guests in our little home, as the balcony faces the loading docks. There are also enough local bodies of water that, at this time of year anyway, we are treated to sudden bouts of geese honking their way across the area. The geese, in fact, are loud enough to drown out polite conversation. We enjoy this. Lately we've been hearing the local High School's band practicing outside, most often the drum corps. The school is close enough that on Saturdays we can hear the crowd cheering at football games, again with the band.
